FOUGÈRE & CHYPRE Formulation: Weekend Session September 17-18, 2016 - Providence Perfume Co.

FOUGÈRE & CHYPRE Formulation: Weekend Session November 3-4, 2018

 Intermediate / Advanced level class

Chypre and Fougère styles of perfume are the most misunderstood, yet most lauded formulations.  From Guerlain's Mitsouko to Chanel No. 19, these predominantly green scents are sophisticated renditions reminiscent of the island of Cyprus and fern traced back to 1882 with the creation of Houbigant's Fougere Royale.

In Session 1 on Saturday, we will focus on fougère formulation, with a concentration on various lavender, moss and coumarin rich essences.  Attendees will create two variations of these classic masculine formulations.  The first will be the CLASSIC style Fougère fragrance followed by a MODERN interpretation where additional materials such as vetiver, bergamot, geranium, wood and mint will be introduced.

In Session 2 on Sunday, CHYPRE formulation will begin.  Again attendees will begin by formulating a CLASSIC Chypre, followed by a more challenging feminine forward Chypre formulation.  The focus will be on creating balanced blends highlighting oakmoss, bergamot, patchouli, and labdanum.

Session #1 runs on Saturday November 3rd from 10:30 am-5:00 pm with a short lunch break.  Session #2 runs on Sunday November 4th from 10:30 am -2:00 pm. This two day class will cover:

-raw materials

-variations on the fougere style of perfumery

-variations on the chypre style of perfumery

-pronounced differences between these fragrance categories.

-historical references and examples of heralded chypre and fouler fragrances.

-writing formulas

-scaling formulas

-the "big six" notes for formulation: lavender, moss, patchouli, bergamot, coumarin, labdanum

-accord building

-distinguishing characteristics of materials i.e. the scent profile of lavender  absolute vrs. lavender essential oil and how they present differently in fragrances.

Attendees will create at least five perfumes over the weekend. This class is heavily focused on actual perfume blending and is hands-on with access to a wide variety of perfumery materials.

Students will create two versions of FOUGÈRE styles of perfumes to take home and will receive an individual fragrance consultation and evaluation.

Session 2 attendees will focus on two distinct styles of CHYPRE perfumes.  Students will create their own versions of fragrance to take home.
