Advanced Perfumery Methods: Refining Fragrance Formulation and Accord Building

Advanced Perfumery Methods: Refining Fragrance Formulation and Accord Building

Advanced level class

This advanced natural perfuming class is intended for students who are have already taken intermediate level courses in natural perfuming and/or have extensive experience with natural perfuming. This course will delve deeper into more challenging topics as they relate to accord building and refining fragrance formulations, giving attendees exposure to and experience with various methods and approaches to fine-tuning natural perfumes.

In this class, attendees will have access to a wide variety of essences -- some of which are quite rare and/or challenging to source -- in order to create their fragrances. We will also focus on the nuances of essences, spending time in particular on essences that have slight and often subtle variations between them.

Session #1 runs Saturday, September 23rd, 2017 from 10:00 am-5:00 pm with a short lunch break. Session #2 runs Sunday, September 24th, 2017 from 10:30 am-2:00 pm.

This two day course will cover the following topics:

-Formulating accords as cost-saving measures: Students will learn how to build accords that will work as substitutes in fragrances for more expensive essences (for example, carnation).

-Formulating floral fantasy accords: Students will learn how to creat accords that replicate scents from botanical materials that cannot be naturally distilled, such as lilac, honeysuckle, and lily.

-Creating accords to overcome challenges that natural perfumery can present: There are certain popular perfume genres that present challenges to natural perfumers, as they are unable to be formulated with natural essences and botanicals. These genres include aquatics and musks. In this portion of the course, students will learn how to create accords that can serve to approximate or fulfill the function of these challenging genres.

-Student choice: Students will choose a challenging type of accord that they would like to create and will receive dedicated attention and feedback from the perfumer during their formulation.

-Using essences for impact: In this portion of the course, students will learn which essences can be used in formulations to make thoughtful impact and fine-tuning in fragrance formulations.

-Tweaking student formulations: Students are asked to bring formulations they would like to perfect along with a quantity of the corresponding fragrance for feedback and evaluation. The perfumer will provide guidance in how to address the challenges and refine the formula to achieve the effect that the students are aiming for.
