It's the last day of the Joy in January blogathon! Here in Rhode Island the sun is shining and it's clear and windy. It's amazing how a little sunshine can lift your spirits.

In thinking of joy and today's giveaway, I thought of my hands. As I got ready for bed last night I remembered to slather my hands with cream. I recalled washing dishes earlier, meticulously scrubbing beakers and glass funnels from my earlier perfume making endeavors. The hot water stung my hands. A sure sign they were dry. As I looked at my hands closely I felt my face flush red. They looked terrible. I have large strong hands with big knuckles. They are not what I'd describe as feminine looking hands. They are dry, red with very short nails. (I have terrible weak thin nails that tear and break and bend no matter what I do--so I cut them.) At one point in my life as a sales representative, my hands were pointed out by a manager as a sign of ill grooming, apparently my digits were a deal breaker. "You're doing great--but your hands! You must bite your nails--they look awful. Why don't you just go and get some artificial nails put on? They'd look so much better," He'd said imploringly to me. My manager was the sort who wore too much cologne and strutted when he walked.
As I looked at my hands and had a shameful flashback to the conversation with my old sales manager, I thought of how difficult it is to take care of ourselves. Adding a dose of seasonal depression does nothing to help this. It's hard enough to pamper ourselves when we are happy. It's hard to take the time to make ourselves feel good. I reminded myself that my hands are strong and good. They are powerful. They are nurturing. They've scrubbed floors, and wrote papers. They've changed diapers and made beds. They've brushed dogs and dried tears. They've made perfumes and picked flowers. I hoped to pass this sentiment on. To make someone feel good . . . in their skin!

Today we are giving away a bottle of our Wild Lime Leaf body oil. This is the product I reach for when I need a pick me up. The aroma is a refreshing, green, energizing blend of Mexican lime oil, combava petitgrain (often referred to as kaffir lime), violet leaf and jasmine grandiflorum. It's got zing and zest and wakes you up. Unisex and clean. The best part? The skin softening blend of apricot, safflower, jojoba, and sweet almond oils. Your skin will be softer than you can imagine, especially if applied fresh out of the bath or shower while skin is till damp. Our motto for the final day of Joy In January: smell good, look good, feel good!

Because this is a full size product (heavy bottle) and international shipping costs are high, this drawing is only open to U.S. residents. Sorry International friends. We love you.
Please share a comment on how you "pamper yourself happy." In other words, what lifts your spirits when you're feeling down, tired or dreary? Is it a glass of wine? Take-out pizza? Best to stop listing my own pick-me-ups :) A walk in the park? A hot bath? Do tell and be entered to win Wild Lime Leaf body oil. Please visit all participating perfumer's blogs for the final day of the Joy In January Event. Winners to be announced tomorrow!

For me my go to pick me up is a walk in nature. I love looking at all the beauty that surrounds us always. Our lives get so busy that we sometimes fail to notice and appreciate the simple beautiful things in life. Great blog Charna. I too have weak short nails and having tried artificial once no way, I couldn’t do a darn thing:)

Interesting how you mention hands. I have severe arthritis in my hands and am recovering from surgery in my right so as to have surgery on my left hand. I work as a cook and my cooking days are pretty much over..it has been kind of a depressing winter. To cheer myself, I have funny friends that I call on the phone, I watch funny movies and read funny books. Looking at the humorous side of life has helped me for years. I also spend time every day consciously focusing on the moment through the five senses: really concentrating on a painting, the feel of a silk scarf or the cat’s fur, smelling perfume and picking out individual notes, listening intently to music, and of course, eating something wonderful. The lime scented oil sounds wonderful, thanks for doing these giveaways. :)

I’m with Sandi – I go outside to pamper myself. It’s one of the great things about working at home, taking breaks in the yard. I also love a nice, unscented hand lotion that I can put my most recent perfume or blending experiment on top of. Your lime blend sounds great!

I’m very much a cuppa tea person. I have a bunch of different types of tea – my smaller selection at work includes thai tea, toucha supreme, lapsang souchong, earl grey, dragon well green, white tea, green tea from japan, licorice mint, and PG tips. (That’s half what i’ve got on my desk, and I have easily twice as much tea at home as at work.)

I live by the ocean, so I go for a walk on the beach. It’s a great way to refresh my mind, body and spirit!

wow, you are just on target with this post. as a (still rather) new mother, I have no time to pamper myself.
just last night I was thinking of how much time I used to spend dressing myself up, scenting myself up etc. don’t do any of that now…
wandering how I can dress nicely again without puting as much effort into it as i used to. (so far i wear sweat pants and a whatever shirt every day)
so that’s my to do list.
how do i chear myself up….
I like to ‘run away’ into the great outdoors as well, sit down curled up some where where no one can see and just look at the view (i live on a very high mountain) talk to myself, be still and forget about everything.
when I can’t do that because I need to stay in the house I go to my perfumes -I sorta make perfumes

funny you should ask… winter has arrived here. it’s misting snow, the temp is 7F with calls for another night of subzero socks in bed weather.
so i ramp up the diffusion of oils in the house— the good stuff. grin there’s nothing like indulging in floral absolutes… like the rose in my room right now… of course, a dab in your cupid’s bow, silkened through the hair or even in your palms is decadent.
the body oil is a wonderful idea… to cocoon and shield oneself in light! massage?
thank you for your sharing and teaching and honoring the weather within charna!

I think the best pick-me-up I have is going to the botanical gardens. It is an hour and a half drive from home, so I don’t do it as often as I should, but nothing makes me quite as happy as letting my nose and camera guide me through an oasis of plants and smells. I really need to go up there again, its been too long.
Thank you again for participating in the Joy in January project!

When I’m down or had a rough day there’s nothing like a hot bath. It beats vegging out in front of the tv (or facebook) and it’s a chance to start over even if it just means getting in bed and letting go of it all. Ideally after having rubbed some lovely scented product all over myself (hint hint)!

Mmm wine baths! Nice wine, nice bath salts… then getting out, putting on some yummy perfume and something silky. And knowing I did all of that just for me.

Good post – and the comments on this post have been helpful, too. Good reminders of what we can do to take care of ourselves, no matter what’s going on or how busy we are.
I, too, have “unfeminine”-looking hands (but since so many women have big, strong hands, maybe it’s time to re-define what feminine hands are) and nails that break, so I keep them short. But as my husband says, when I tell him I like his classical-looking hands: your hands look like they can get things done – and they do.
I remember my Mom’s hands, and they were the same: substantial hands, nails short, un-colored (she was a nurse), with the occasional burn or scar (she was a wonderful baker). I always think of them in action: knitting, sewing, fixing the toaster, bandaging a child – and I feel proud of the hands I inherited. I hope that you are proud of your capable hands, too. ; ]
Nature always invigorates me – but when I can’t get there, I soak my feet in essential-oil & herb-scented water, and daydream or read – and it works almost as well.
Your Wild Lime Leaf body oil sounds like something both my husband & I could try – which would be great.
(Oh, yeah, and your ex-manager sounds like a creep – attaching fake nails should not be part of one’s job description – unless they are a hand model or something…)

Thanks for this generous draw!
My usual auto-pampering tends to be tea (very into jasmine now), dark chocolate, occasional bubble baths, and a calming vanilla body lotion (used some this morning on my cracking cuticles!). And pefume too! Takes me on a lovely scented journey.
Music and walks outside are so basic to my own personal maintenance, especially in the winter when it can get dreary, that they don’t really register as pampering, although they are definitely an enjoyable aspect of self-care. But trips to the library to pick out amusing books and dvds feel much more indulgent, like retail therapy with no bills!

My hands are also not the most beautiful. And I do bite my nails. It’s awful, but I’m over it. Things I love to pamper myself happy — baking sweets. Cookies, cakes, trying new recipes. I’d say about only half turn out successfully, but I love indulging in the time when the inspiration strikes. I’m a huge fan of your body oils in Orange Blossom and Lavender, but haven’t yet tried Wild Lime Leaf. So this would be perfect to try.

Your Wild Lime Leaf body oil sounds like a great pick me up any time of year.
My pampering: I love to put essential oils in my bath and have long soak. Then I put on my softest sweats, whatever is my favorite fragrance of the moment (lately it’s been Indochine or Kalimantan), have a glass of wine and snuggle up on the couch to watch a movie with my honey!

There are several simple ways I pamper myself. I brew a cup of fragrant tea and enjoy it on the couch with a good book. I go for an hour long walk in the afternoon with a good friend and we chat about life. i annoint myself every night before bed with my own “concoctions” (carrier oils blended with fragrant essential oils such as lavender/cocoa or patchouli wild orange or just plain old extra virgin organic coconut oil which smells so wonderful I am in instant bliss!).

Ways to pamper the self, hot baths, saunas, hot springs, hike to a secluded lake and nude sun bathe, make a delicious meal and serve with a good wine, sleep in a hammock.
