It's a joy spreading, smile inducing, uplifting blogathon project from the Natural Perfumer's Guild! It's January and we aim to spread joy and fragrance. January is often called the cruelest month. Here in New England it's cold, it's dark, and the days are short. Many suffer from the "winter blues" brought on by the lack of sunlight.
I call this particular season the Winterless Winter. Here in Rhode Island we've had no snow. This is bizarre. Having lived my entire life in New England, from Vermont, to New Hampshire, to Massachusetts to Rhode Island I do not recall ever having a snowless winter. According to an article I read online at Discover Magazine http://blogs.discovermagazine.com/80beats/2012/01/12/why-this-winter-is-so-crazily-warm/
the reason this winter is snow-free is due to an unusual jet stream pulling warm air across the country (shades of global climate change?) Whatever the reason for the lack of snow, wildly fluctuating temperatures and frequent thunderstorms I feel the effect. Something is off. The trees and plants are confused. Trees bud in the warm rain and then freeze. I'm as confused. The holidays felt strange with no snow. Lighting a fire in the fireplace feels odd when it's 50 degrees outside in December. My children ask me everyday when it will snow. "When can we build a snowman Mom?"
So, in order to help spread cheer I look to scent. Scents of citrus, jasmine and lilacs feel warm and happy, a reminder of impending spring. I often find myself reaching for essences that I find uplifting when it's cold and grey outside. I recently discovered the finest bitter orange essential oil I have ever experienced. It's sunshine in a bottle. Bright, clean and sparkling. Excellent quality. I use this bitter orange along with others such as rose, orange flower, amber, vanilla and ambrette in Divine eau de parfum.

Would you like to try Divine? Or the incredible uplifting bitter orange essence I've found? Leave a comment below and the chosen winner will receive a sample of Divine and the fab bitter orange! Look for additional giveaways tomorrow and Wednesday.
Please check out all the talented generous participating Guild Perfumers blogs. We are all giving away fabulous scented treats to brighten your January!

wow, causing the trees to bud and then killing them with rain/hail/snow is the worst.
we had a season like that a few years ago, it was an agricultural disaster.
all those poor almond trees…. their blossoms being stolen away, without growing up to be almonds.
i hope things will balance out over there, same as i am hoping for a good rainy and blessedly fruitful winter here.

La Nina has been giving us peculiar weather on the West Coast too — abnormally dry and warm — until today when the threatened heavy (for us) snow finally came. It’s actually a relief, because it feels more in tune with the calendar.
Love the idea of being able to sample the bitter orange oil as well as Divine. Thanks for the draw opportunity.

I always look forward to when the days start getting longer….I try to keep myself upbeat through the Holidays….then I wait for the sun to stay out a tiny bit longer each day until it’s finally Spring. Baby steps!

Charna, Miami is also under the effects of an unseasonably warm winter. My frangipanis still have some flowers and leaves, and they’ve never had them this late in the season before.
I wanted to thank you for participating in Joy in January, and for helping to spread some Divine inspiration on the way!
xoxo

I’d love to try this! I know exactly what you mean about the no winter winter – here in the lower great lakes we’ve had some snow, but right now it’s melting in the rain. Very wierd. I’m a fan of bitter orange and Divine sounds lovely, thanks for the opportunity.

Dear Charna, here in Romania is the same. I can’t remember last winter without snow. It’s incredibly warm for this period…

Yes, the plants are confused! I’m worried about the honeybees too, with all those plants budding too early and then the spring bloom will be delayed or missing altogether.
I have already sampled your lovely Divine, so I won’t be needing that. BUT I’m dying to sample this bitter orange essential oil, the best you’ve ever smelled!

Thank you so much for being a part of the Joy in January project!
Divine sounds really refreshing and joyful. Lilac is one of my favorite signs of spring, when things finally start to cheer up for me.
I hope some snow arrives soon for you all to enjoy.
With much appreciation,
Michael S

Wow, I can almost smell your post…I’d have to say that I have an enormous stash of cinnamon sticks. I stir honey in my tea with them, I stir chocolate in milk with them…and I have them in my steam pot atop my woodstove. Yes, the dreary days of winter have arrived here in the Northeast U.S. /Upstate New York.
Please include me in your drawing of the day:)

Oh, I missed this post yesterday! I remember how weird it was to be out in California for winter – I was so used to it being cold and snowy, and instead it was warm enough (for us coming from a colder climate) to be on the beach at Christmas! I’ve gotten used to the lack of snow, but I still expect it to be cold and rainy during the winter. We haven’t had much rain recently…

Oh, crikey, my favorite spice is also cardomum! Now i feel like I’m copying you. I also love ginger, nutmeg, and cinnamon – and the “chinese five spice” blend (I think the bottle we have includes star anise, cloves, ginger, cinnamon).

I’d love to try Divine—it does sound, yes, divine!
The weather has been weird here too (MA)
We had a couple inches of snow overnight (I went for a nighttime walk in the pristine powder) but the next day was warm enough that they all melted away by noon. A magnolia tree down the street was budding last week.
Thanks for the draw!
